About

Air Shape Index is an audiovisual performance and process for live collaboration by Jenna Caravello and Celia Hollander. Longtime collaborators born and raised in Los Angeles, Caravello and Hollander reflect on the forces of ecological and societal structures on the air they breathe. Throughout Air Shape Index, their audio/visual relationship formally and thematically invokes shifting systems and the processes behind mapping these systems; Hollander builds musical compositions and Caravello uses custom video game software to plot and respond to Hollander’s input. In this way, Caravello and Hollander meditate on conditions before and after natural catastrophe. Jenna Caravello is an artist, whose work is motivated by love and loss, the identity politics of digital avatars, and social relationships across virtual forums. Working with animation and video game software, she makes interactive installations, short films, and mixed-reality performances. Celia Hollander is a composer and artist working with audio, performance, installation, and text. Her work critically engages ways that audio and the act of listening can shape temporal perception, generate narratives, and cultivate social connection. At their respective workstations, Caravello and Hollander form a system of collaborative reflection that seeks understanding and a virtual framework for the air around them.

Celia Hollander is a Los Angeles based composer, producer and performer. Combining acoustic and digital elements, her work focuses on themes such as shaping time through composition, surrendering to improvisation, and music as a natural phenomenon of dynamic systems. Her discography features releases on Leaving Records, Longform Editions, Recital and Noumenal Loom and she has performed at venues including 2220 Arts & Archives (LA), Grace Cathedral (SF), Basilica Hudson (NY) and MOCA (LA). She is currently an educator at the Herb Alpert School of Music at California Institute of the Arts and she has created original scores and sound design for film, TV, dance performances and VR.

Jenna Caravello is a Los Angeles based artist working with animation, video game software, VR, and motion capture technology. Her short films, mixed-reality performances, and interactive installations explore virtual object-oriented hauntology, love, online relationships, and the role of memory in personal and collective narratives. Caravello uses the tools and conventions of animation and video game industries to critically engage with science-fantasy, world-building, and techno-mysticism. Her work seeks out humanity, absurdity, and vulnerability where computer culture and analog mundanity intersect. Caravello is an Assistant Professor at UCLA in the department of Design Media Arts and Associate Director of the UCLA Game Lab.
